Dexter: Review

I've recently started watching the series Dexter. The series revolves around Dexter Morgan, a blood pattern analyst that lives in Miami, but is simultaneously a serial killer. He struggles with being empty, his inner demons, and controlling his urges to kill, and reserving them for those who truly deserve it. Dexter goes through life trying to balance this, along with his personal life. He works alongside the MPD, along with his adoptive sister who is also an officer, to solve various murders in Miami.

SPOILER WARNING!!
To be honest, I've only seen the first season, which involves Dexter tracking various serial killers, and most notably an elusive figure known as "The Ice Truck Killer." This murderer turns out to be the significant other of his sister, Debra. The show also explores the relationship and conflict between his sister and himself, and the feud between his girlfriend, Rita, and her abusive, yet loving father, husband.

There are so many elements to this series that make it so great. It's quite riveting, appropriately shot, intelligently and sharply written, and suspenseful. One cannot help but wince at that the depiction of the protagonist disposing of his putrid captives. The show is also laced with bits of dark humor, often playing to Dexter's despondence, and to the morbidity of each murder scene. Each player is brilliant in their respective roles, most notably Michael C. Hall as the titular character. Watching this self-deprecating enigma is so intriguing, and you root for every scum he gets rid of. This piece of entertainment is the sort of work in the same vain as Breaking Bad or  Weeds. That is to say, a show about people doing bad things for the betterment of others, but in such a way that is such an exciting, and great to experience. This series is a masterpiece, and I cannot wait to watch more.
